I'm sure everyone has heard this line before and I'm sure most of us have also been guilty of using it to our advantage or at least thinking about using it to our advantage at one point or another. However, this is a quote from a TV show called The Big Bang Theory and its purpose is to remind us that beauty isn't only superficial-it's powerful. Until recently, American society was obsessed with appearance and shallow beauty standards: hair, hair color and hair lengths.
These standards were so important because they dictated how we would be perceived by others and by society as a whole. If we didn't meet these standards we were considered unattractive or unimportant while if we did meet these standards we were considered attractive and important. Today, appearance is less important than it used to be, at least when it comes to young women and older men who should know better than anyone that appearance isn't always indicative of intelligence or character. Appearance is still important, however, for younger women who want to stand out in a crowd or for older women who feel like they need to keep up with the Joneses (e.g., their partners).
Appearance does play an important role in our lives; we can't deny that fact, but it doesn't mean we should allow ourselves to become obsessed with appearances.
