About This Quote

When I was a child, I was a bit of a rebel. I got in trouble a lot and was always asking to be excused from class or being sent to the principal’s office. This upset my mother a great deal. She was a devout Christian and prayed every night.

She would tell me, “God is always right. Don’t ever forget that.” As I grew older, I still didn’t understand why she was so upset with me; after all, I wasn’t hurting anyone. It wasn’t until one night that I had an epiphany: My mother believed in God and prayed every night to that God for help and guidance for her and her family.

And then something happened that changed my life completely: My mother fell down the stairs and broke her leg. When she got home from the hospital, she asked me to pray with her. It was clear she needed comfort at this time, so it seemed like an appropriate request.

What she didn’t realize is that when we pray to God, we are asking him for help and guidance for ourselves as well as our loved ones. We are asking him to be our “steering wheel” and give us direction through life’s storms and challenges so we can get through them without stumbling too much or falling down altogether.
