Rowan is a Celtic god of Spring. He was also the god of hazelnuts and the scythe. In the myth, Rowan is one of two brothers who make love to a shepherdess. She is promised to the elder brother, but in a jealous rage, he slits her throat and then lays siege to their father's castle.

Rowan slaughters each of his brothers in turn, and then sets out to avenge his sister's murder. The story seems to have a happy ending, with Rowan being bound by oaths tied with hazel-twigs and forced to take up living in the woods. There he is tormented by the ghost of his sister for eternity, but he goes through life satisfied - having avenged himself on those who had wronged him. The myth ends with Rowan being turned into a bird for living among humans and not staying in the wilderness.
