In the famous 4th-century BC philosophy book "The Republic", Plato gives a definition of a smartass: "Any person who has a ready answer to everything but whose answers are worthless." The main point of this quote is the fact that you shouldn't waste your time thinking about things that don't matter. He also says that there are no words to be said by man at no time because there is nothing that needs to be said at all. This can also be taken as a criticism of any religion that wants to get its message across by means of words, rather than actions. In other words, it's wrong to preach concepts for which you have no proof. The saying is sometimes shortened in modern times to: "There's no such thing as a smartass — only stupid people."
