I saw that there is no Nature, That Nature doesn’t exist, That there are hills, valleys, plains, That there are trees, flowers, weeds, That there are rivers and stones, But there is not a whole these belong to, That a real and true wholeness Is a sickness of our ideas. Alberto Caeiro
About This Quote

When Lou Reed sang, “I saw that there is no Nature,That Nature doesn’t exist,That there are hills, valleys, plains,That there are trees, flowers, weeds,That there are rivers and stones,But there is not a whole these belong to,That a real and true wholenessIs a sickness of our ideas.” he was speaking about the imbalances in our world that have been created by the way we think. In his words: “There is no Nature.” This means that we have created Nature to fit our idea of how the world should be. There are hills and valleys to fit our idea of what mountains and valleys should look like. We have created trees and flowers to fit our ideas about what a tree and flower should look like.

We have created rivers and stones to fit our idea of what a river and stone should look like. However, these things do not actually exist in the way that we think they should exist. They exist as much as we can imagine them to exist.

And yet, they also do not actually exist as they really are. They only exist as we imagine them to exist because we make them up in our minds.
