Here was an absolutely compelling road sign. Stay on the road of objective truth - there is objective being and objective value. Stay on the road. There is Truth. There is a Point and Purpose and Essence to it all. Keep searching. You will find it.

About This Quote

This sign was on the side of the road leading up to the house of a friend who was at the time undergoing treatment for cancer. My friend had been so badly hit by this disease that he had lost all sense of objective truth. He said there was no objective being, no life after death, no heaven or hell. And he said he had lost all belief in God. I could not believe that anyone could be that irrational. I told him that staying on the road of objective truth meant not giving up on your search for truth despite what you have found out at the moment. He said, “But I have given up on everything! There is no being - nothing! If there is nothing, then it doesn't matter if I haven't found anything!” I told him that if he gave up on finding something true, then he would lose his life as well as his search for truth. He said, “But I don't want to be alive anymore!” I told him that it would be terrible if his search were to end in death too. He said, “Well, then I give up.” I asked him how long it had taken him to give up on everything and he replied, “Just a few minutes ago!”
