About This Quote

My mother is a firm believer in the long pause, useful in interrogations, proclamations of truth, and the occasional cutting dead of someone without their knowing it. The long pause is one of the greatest weapons in your arsenal when you are getting to know someone. It lets them know that you’re interested but not desperate. It lets them know that you’re paying attention without making them feel like you’re being judgmental.

It lets them know that you can be trusted while not revealing too much about yourself. The way the long pause is used by my mother is great for interrogations because it tends to have a bit more of an authoritative tone than one might expect from someone who has just said something so out-of-character. She also uses it to say things that are true but might need to be tweaked.

The biggest reason she uses it, though, is because she knows I’ll get away with it!
