About This Quote

If I could make it better, I would. In some ways it’s a stupid, obvious thing to say, but the way he said it, so honest and simple like it’s the truest thing there is, makes the tears prick in my eyes. This is a quote from Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver where she talks about her friend Sam. Sam was one of those people who had been filtered by the media because of his involvement in a tragic event at his school.

When Sam’s parents were killed in an accident, he was still a child and the media made him the butt of jokes. After this tragedy, Sam sailed through life without any problems. He was never in trouble and had no problems with bullies or anything like that.

He was completely normal except for one big thing: he died when he was 16 years old. Sam accepted his death and the events that lead to it without any problems or regrets. He did not blame anyone or anything for what happened to him and only wished that things could have gone differently for him while he was alive if only to end his painful existence.

When I read this book, I felt like crying because of how sad it was that this boy had to go through all that before he even turned 16 years old. Even though he died early on, he still got to see so many things in life and be part of so many things before his death. But mostly what stuck with me were his words at the end of this book about wishing things could have been different so that things would have ended differently for him while he was alive if only to get rid of the pain he went through before dying earlier than expected.
