Martin Luther responded to the Pope Leo X, July 18, 1520. The Pope was pressuring Luther to recant his beliefs, saying that they were heretical and blasphemous. Luther said he could not do so because of his conscience, which he said was captive to the word of God. This would be the last time in history that a pope would send an emissary to someone who disagreed with them.
