The honor a man carries in his heart cannot be explained, lass, " he said slowly. "Nor can you measure the courage of a man who will not betray his friends, even though he faces disaster himself. We've no right to question, unless we have known the same dilemma and acquitted ourselves with the same integrity. Jan Cox Speas
About This Quote

While I appreciate the sentiment of the quote, I don't think it works when taken out of context. The honor a man carries in his heart cannot be explained, lass," he said slowly. "Nor can you measure the courage of a man who will not betray his friends, even though he faces disaster himself. We've no right to question, unless we have known the same dilemma and acquitted ourselves with the same integrity. Where does it say that every man must only betray his friends to save himself? The idea that someone would sacrifice their friends in order to save themselves shows a lack of character. The fact that I'm willing to sacrifice my friends' happiness for myself shows that I value my own life over theirs.

That's not honor; it's cowardice. I would never do such a thing to my own friends; but if someone else did, I'd cheer them on while they did it, because they're better than me.
