The subconscious n conscious mind together comprise functional brain which operates 24 hours a day as a kind of computer, selecting and registering data n then feeding it back when need it. The subconscious parts of our brain try to guide us towards what is logical, or what would be good for us, while the conscious parts are responsible for making decisions and choosing how to act in any given situation. This quote is based on the discovery by the Swiss neurologist Carl Wernicke who discovered consciousness in 1874. The discovery was made after he was injured in the head and woke up in great pain. Over time, he realized that he felt things that he never felt before. He believed that this was due to his injury causing him to become unconscious, but upon waking up he found that this could not be the case.
So he began studying the brain, discovering that there is both mental activity and unconscious activity at all times. He also discovered memory which is stored in the unconscious mind; therefore, when we are unconscious, we cannot remember anything.
