Samuel Johnson had an excellent mind, but it was never allowed to shine. He was looked down on as a fool by the philosophers who surrounded him, and he was ridiculed for his lack of education by those who were better educated than himself.

Even his friends were unkind to him because he had not the education they thought desirable. The fact that Samuel Johnson is now known as one of the greatest scholars in history makes it all the more remarkable that he had such a difficult life.
