This quote is a play on the idea that a movie with a love story and a mystery in it is a “delicious cocktail party.” The term “cocktail party” was popularized by British novelist E.F. Benson, who wrote about the high-society gatherings of the 1920s and 1930s in his novels. In one of these novels, Secret Sin, written in 1930, Benson wrote: “The whole mystery is an elaborate cocktail party, which all know about but none can possibly find out.” This quote continues to use the popular phrase to make sense of the different elements of suspenseful, murder mystery stories.
