About This Quote

The way of the world is one of personalization. We're all told that we're here for a purpose and that purpose is to serve others. In today's world of instant gratification, it's easy to see the effects of this on our children. When an adult asks a child a direct question about themselves, the child has to think really hard about what they're going to say.

They can't talk about how they 'really didn't care' or 'liked the teacher' or 'wanted to play football.' No, they have to talk about how good their best friend is and how much they really loved their school. If a child says, "I just wanted to play football," they'll be treated as an idiot by everyone from then on out. And, if they say that they just liked the math teacher or just wanted to do well in school because it makes them feel good about themselves, adults will assume that they were lying and probably assume it was a bad reason too.

That's not a way of thinking. That's an attitude of personalization.
