Relax. Cultivate your children's capabilities. Maximize their strengths. Do not handicap their unique skills by spending too much time on making them average in everything. Help them create their own style, and appreciate your children for who God created them to be.

About This Quote

Many of us have been conditioned to think that our value lies in our ability to become a specialist. We are told that if we don’t go to college, we will never get a job that pays well. In fact, most of us do not even graduate from high school because we feel it is necessary to earn a degree in order to succeed. But what many people don’t realize is that their willingness to specialize is a handicap.

I know a woman who has a master’s degree in education and a PhD in counseling. She has gone on to do very well financially because she specializes in working with children and young adults. But she would have been just as successful if she had been willing to work with older people, or men or women, or any other type of client that was not related to her degree.

In the long run, her choice of specialization has cost her far more than it has provided her with financially.
