They hoped to protect people from government censorship by creating a system in which the government could only censor speech which was likely to cause violence or incite illegal activity. Unfortunately, the founders also believed that free speech did not mean threatening the freedom of others. It is up to us to decide whether or not we will allow ourselves to be threatened.
