Down they went, into the darkness. Down ancient, worn steps coated in slippery mildew. Down into the deep recesses of the earth, far beneath the corridors of Deep-Spire.

About This Quote

The Dark Tower series is a beautifully written story from Stephen King. In the first book of the series, the main character is a boy named Roland, who has been exiled from his home, Mid-World. In order to escape from the cruelty of his step-father, he is sent north to find a tower that is said to be a safe haven from the corruptive influence of his step-father's evil power. However, when his guide through the desert tells him of a place where they will be safe and protected by a man named Walter, who is an old friend of Roland's father, he goes with excitement.

The journey is long and they go through many obstacles on their way to their goal. Finally, they arrive at their destination and discover that there are three people waiting for them as well as a lone dog. The three people lead them into a deep cavern where they meet with Walter and learn of the truth about Mid-World and their quest for the Dark Tower.

Walter tells them that Mid-World is not truly their home but a prison designed to keep them in captivity. He explains that they must travel south until they reach a place called Eld which is where Mid-World meets another world called Earthsea which can be seen as an island in space, though it consists entirely of water located in the ocean around Mid-World. However, this world cannot be reached by normal means such as boat or plane because it was created by magic and is far away from Mid-World.

Those who reach this place will find themselves on Earthsea and be able to use magical weapons to fight back against those who would corrupt them and keep them imprisoned in Mid-World. Once these people discover this secret and free themselves from their lives on Mid-World, they must then make their way back north to their point of origin where they will find the Dark Tower waiting for them as well as new weapons that will allow them to fight those who would do them harm once more.
