When the Lilliputian family of the Pequenos migrated to Gulliver’s land of the Man Mountains, they expected to encounter many strange issues while settling in. About This Quote

The Lilliputians were a race of people who lived on the tip of an imaginary island. Gulliver was to go there and serve as a judge, settling disputes between the people of the land. After a few days, he decides to spend time with Mrs. Pequenos and her family.

Her daughter, Aglaya, was initially friendly to Gulliver but upon discovering his size she became envious and realized she wished she could be as small as he was. Mrs. Pequenos understood the way her daughter felt and told her that she and Gulliver were not meant to be together.

The daughters response was that they weren’t meant to be apart either, and thus she took Gulliver up to their room so they could get married. In this situation, Gulliver had been taught by his adoptive mother that falling in love with the wrong person would only lead to unhappiness for everyone involved so he began pushing away from Aglaya until he was ready to leave. His reasoning was that if she truly loved him she wouldn’t want him to leave her but rather stay with her forever.

He felt that whatever decision she made would be the right one for them both so he would have no other option but to accept it. However, when he pulled away from her, she started crying because she felt that if she had been big enough for them both then they wouldn’t have been separated in the first place. In this example, we can see how falling in love can make one feel as if they must stay together no matter what happens or what is asked of them which can often lead to heartache.
