Imprisoning philosophy within the professionalizations and specializations of an institutionalized curriculum, after the manner of our contemporary European and North American culture, is arguably a good deal more effective in neutralizing its effects than either religious censorship or political terror

About This Quote

The idea that the death of philosophy in the modern world means that it is not possible to have a positive effect on society is clearly an oversimplification. A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 indicated that college students who took a survey on philosophical issues were more knowledgeable about philosophy than students who didn’t take the survey. It doesn’t matter how much they know if they are not willing to apply their knowledge to society. They can read philosophy books all day long but if they don’t think about the subject afterward, it will be of no use.
