To the untutored sage, the concentration of population was the prolific mother of all evils, moral no less than physical. He argued that food is good, while surfeit kills; that love is good, but lust destroys; and not less dreaded than the pestilence following upon crowded and unsanitary dwellings was the loss of spiritual power inseparable from too close contact with one's fellow-men. About This Quote

Luther was a German reformer active in the Catholic Church. He had many theological ideas, but is best known for his opposition to the Catholic Church's practice of selling indulgences. These were certificates which could be purchased by those who presented money toward the cost of the indulgences, on the expectation that they would provide forgiveness for their sins. This practice made him very unpopular among some people, who thought that Luther was encouraging people to sin.

Luther's critique of indulgences was that they encouraged people to buy their way into heaven. The German word for this is "Indulgences", which is Latin for "forgiving sins".
