The meaning of this quote is pretty much what the name of the book implies. The book is about a girl whose parents are killed in a car crash and she lost her little brother in the same accident. She has to move to another town to take care of her little brother’s two kids. While she was there, she meets a boy who is named Markham.

They start dating each other and they are very happy. One day, they are sitting on a park bench and they are talking about their lives. Suddenly, they see someone running towards them so they start running too.

It turns out that it was the girl’s brother’s ex-girlfriend who came back for revenge because he didn’t love her anymore after he met his new girlfriend. The girl grabs the gun given to her by her sister and shoots the ex-girlfriend but then the gun slips from her hands and hits the boy’s head, killing him instantly. The book ends with this beautiful line: “I know which life is my real one now, no matter what happens.
