Camus’s quote is the reason that he committed suicide. Camus wrote this quote after his girlfriend, Francine died in an auto accident, resulting in Camus’s despair and depression. Camus was destined to live a life filled with tribulations. He had an unhappy childhood; his mother died when he was five (his father was not around).

His brother died in World War I, which caused Camus to feel like an outcast. He also had to move schools frequently due to his father’s inability to support the family financially. He also felt alienated because of his lack of connection with anyone else in his family (he was abandoned by his dad and ignored by his brother).

This feeling of rejection caused him to feel like no one understood him or knew him at all so he decided to take his life.
