One of the most frustrating words in the human language, as far as I could tell, was love. So much meaning attached to this one little word. People bandied it about freely, using it todescribe their attachments to possessions, pets, vacation destinations, and favorite foods. In thesame breath they then applied this word to the person they considered most important in theirlives. Wasn’t that insulting? Shouldn’t there be some other term to describe deeper emotion? .Alexandra Adornetto
About This Quote
The way we use language to describe ourselves and others is incredibly important. However, we use words like love and hate too often and too superficially. We say we love someone, but if they do something that we don’t like, we find a way to make it seem as if they love us less. We say we hate someone, but if they do something that we think is nice or respectful of us, we find a way to make it seem as if our hate is going away.
When it comes to the words love and hate, I think often of a line from a poem by W. B. Yeats called "The Lake Isle of Innisfree." In this poem, Yeats says:
