And so, standing before the aforesaid officiator, the two swore that at every other time of their lives till death took them, they would assuredly believe, feel, and desire precisely as they had believed, felt, and desired during the few preceding weeks. What was as remarkable as the undertaking itself was the fact that nobody seemed at all surprised at what they swore. Thomas Hardy
About This Quote

In the novel "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville, the narrator states that he and his friend Ahab had sworn an oath to each other. The narrator goes on to say that this was not a religious oath, but a purely moral one. The two men had found a common bond of interest and respect for each other after their first meeting. After their second meeting, they took a solemn oath to stick with each other as long as both of them lived. At this point, they were already stuck together because their first encounter was part of the story talking about whaling in the book.
