About This Quote
Was marriage invented to cage love? Marriage is a very old word. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it first appeared in Old English about a thousand years ago. A few centuries later, it made its way into the King James Bible as "cogam" and back into Old English as "cogen". In those days, marriage was a legal contract, not just a social institution.
In medieval society, marriages were arranged by parents who wanted their children to have spouses. These marriages were meant to last until one of the partners died or annulled the marriage by saying they did not want to be married anymore. Over time, the word “cage” became part of our vocabulary as a play on words.
To us today it means a small box or container that confines something within it. So when we think of marriage as being confined or confining, we can understand how some people might have taken this as an insult against the institution itself.
