About This Quote

The Treaty of Tripoli, 1797, was a convention between the United States and Tripoli, signed on November 4, 1797. The treaty reached its final form on January 19, 1798. The treaty declared that the government of the United States was not "in any sense founded on the Christian religion" and that it was not "incompatible with the laws, religion, or tranquillity of Musselmen." It provided for the return of all Christian slaves who had fled to America before 1800. The treaty also required that any person captured by U.S. forces would be guaranteed due process under American law.
