About This Quote

The story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story. Romeo's love for Juliet was so great that he would have given his life for her. Unfortunately, she did not feel the same way about him. While still a young girl, she had fallen in love with a man named Paris, who promised to marry her after he had wooed her by asking her to wear his favorite color.

After Paris died from a plague that swept through Verona, Juliet was heartbroken and felt that she would have been happier if she had not fallen in love with Paris at all. She went into seclusion and did not respond when Romeo entered her home. When it became clear that she would not accept his proposal, Romeo grew bitter and angry.

After making threats against the town of Verona, he left to join the Italian army in hopes to forget Juliet. When his forces were defeated and he nearly lost his life at the hands of poison, he returned home in hopes of convincing Juliet to marry him. When she refused to marry him, he left again and was killed in battle.
