In the early 18th century, a man named John Gay wrote a play called "The Beggar's Opera". In it, he satirized the British class system by showing the lives of aristocratic gentlemen and their servants. In one scene, a character called "Really" speaks these famous lines. Really believes that if he becomes a wealthy man, then a wife will come to him.

He believes that wealth is at the center of everything. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
