Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics. He is best known for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2, which has been dubbed “the world's most famous equation”. Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect", a pivotal step in the development of quantum theory. Although Einstein's early interest was in astronomy, he became convinced that Newton's laws were not enough to reconcile gravity with other forces and conceived the general theory of relativity after reading a popularization of special relativity by physicist Ernst Mach in 1908.
