One of the greatest evils is the foolishness of a good man. For the giving man to withhold helping someone in order to first assure personal fortification is not selfish, but to elude needless self-destruction; martyrdom is only practical when the thought is to die, else a good man faces the consequence of digging a hole from which he cannot escape, and truly helps no one in the long run. About This Quote

These are powerful words written by James Barrie in “The Admirable Crichton.” He was speaking about people who selfishly withhold help from others in order to make sure they are fully prepared to face whatever is coming their way. Unfortunately, this is not too different from the way most people live today. They hold back on doing what is needed in order to prepare for the worst that life has to offer. That's not how it works, though. A person who stands firm when he needs to and then continues on through the next opportunity will eventually win out over a person who holds back and then gets crushed when life comes along and hits him hard.
