About This Quote

When we talk about acting in a manner that is compassionate and empathetic, we often think of it in terms of the other person. Sure, we want to be compassionate and empathetic, but often we do so in order to avoid the consequences that might arise from not being compassionate and empathetic. When we talk about compassion and empathy, people often think of themselves as the benefactors of someone else’s suffering. Often, however, this leads to us feeling bad about ourselves when we realize that our actions were primarily motivated by our own selfishness.

Unfortunately, this is no way to live. Compassion and empathy should be lived out in such a way that we benefit from others’ positive experiences without feeling bad about ourselves. The beauty of altruism is that it lets us feel good when we help others without getting stuck in the guilt and shame that can come with helping others when we are just doing it for ourselves.
