In the novel “In A Dark Wood” by Joyce Carol Oates, the main character has been trapped in a house with a madman who is obsessed with a picture. The madman is trying to find a way to free himself from the picture so he can free his wife from it. The character is also trapped in a room where he is trying to escape from the madman, but each time he tries to leave, the madman throws a paintball at him and he’s unable to flee.
