A picture held us captive. And we could not get outside it, for it lay in our language and language seemed to repeat it to us inexorably.

About This Quote

In the novel “In A Dark Wood” by Joyce Carol Oates, the main character has been trapped in a house with a madman who is obsessed with a picture. The madman is trying to find a way to free himself from the picture so he can free his wife from it. The character is also trapped in a room where he is trying to escape from the madman, but each time he tries to leave, the madman throws a paintball at him and he’s unable to flee. The theme of this quote comes into play when there is something that we can’t get out of our mind. We must be able to use our minds and think of ways to get rid of it. A person could be stuck in a bad relationship or an unhealthy lifestyle and they might find it hard to get out of it and find peace and happiness again.
