Repression by brute force is always a confession of the inability to make use of the better weapons of the intellect–better because they alone give promise of final success.

Ludwig Von Mises
About This Quote

As the political climate of the 1960s began to change, many people were shocked by the sheer brutality of what was occurring. People were shocked at the extreme views of such people as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, and they wondered how such people could really believe in what they stood for.

After all, didn’t these men know that violence was wrong? Didn’t they know that accepting violence as a means to achieve your goals was wrong? Dr. King and Malcolm X believed that violence was a necessity, and that sometimes it was necessary for a person to lose their life so others could live. Violence wasn’t always meant to be used on one person at a time; it could also be used on large groups of people, or even on an entire nation.

Malcolm X said: “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” The fact that Malcolm X and Dr. King used violence shows just how much they believed in what they were doing and how strong their convictions were.
