To those at the great house it means nothing, this handful of earth, but to me it means how much! " (Buck, 57)

Pearl S. Buck
About This Quote

When Buck visits the great house, he feels a sense of awe. The huge complex with its magnificent gardens and courtyards strikes him as being very impressive. But what matters most to him is the interior of the house. There is something about the interior that is more important than all of the fancy exterior.

It is the family that exists within that is important. As Buck says to his wife, “I’ve never felt anything like this inside of me before.” This feeling of belonging is something Buck has not experienced before. He feels like he can be himself in the great house, protected by the love of his family, protected by all of his friends.
