From when she was a baby, Tom has taught the girl to respect, but not fear, the forces of nature- the lightning that might strike the light tower on Janus, the oceans that batter the island.

M.L. Stedman
About This Quote

When Toms daughter was a young child she fell down a ravine. It was then that her father taught her that she could still be alive even when she lost all hope. Even though the girl was scared of the dangers of the ravine, her father never let it stop him from helping her. When Toms daughter was little she went to him for help, and so he helped her every single time.

He taught his daughter not to fear things like lightning and strong winds, but instead to respect them even though they could hurt her. By teaching his daughter not to fear things that could hurt, he succeeded in making her feel safe, which served as an example that anyone can succeed by doing anything.
