We are in the process of creating what deserves to be called the idiot culture. Not an idiot sub-culture, which every society has bubbling beneath the surface and which can provide harmless fun; but the culture itself. For the first time, the weird and the stupid and the coarse are becoming our cultural norm, even our cultural ideal. Carl Bernstein
About This Quote

The idea of the idiot culture has always been an interesting one. With its roots in early 20th century psychology, it is a phenomenon that has been traced back to the geneticist and behaviorist Alfred Adler. He believed that we all have a “psychological type” and this type influenced our actions and personality. He believed that certain people were born to be more intelligent or less intelligent and there was no way for anyone to change their personality or their actions. This is not the case with the idiot culture.

The idiot culture is something that is created by people who think they are having fun at other people’s expense. This idiot culture is the sort of thing that will make you stop and think, “Why would they do that? Why would they be so cruel?” But, as with so many things these days, there is a point to it all. No one likes being on the receiving end of cruel and insensitive actions and if you can somehow manage to provoke such an action, then don’t be surprised if you see a rise in popularity for those who are doing it.
