About This Quote

The complete Apollo team...directly involves slightly over 400,000 people...Included are some if the country's foremost scientists and engineers. This mobilization of men and resources is unprecedented in history since WWII is a statement that even though it came from an Apollo astronaut, this statement isn't supported by fact. The idea that there was a team of 400,000 is supported by a quote from President Kennedy on July 16th, 1963: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." However, there were no 400,000 people involved in the Apollo program. No one group was responsible for every aspect of the mission.

Every person involved in Apollo had individual roles to play and achieved them through teamwork. Engineers worked with astronauts to design equipment; astronauts worked with engineers to design their missions; engineers worked with astronauts to design training exercises; scientists worked with engineers to study the effects of gravity on humans; crew members worked with engineers and scientists to develop procedures for an emergency.
