Nick is trying to tell Caleb that he doesn't have to fight for this team. He can get out of the way if he wants to. But, Nick would never leave him behind, because Nick would never let him fall behind. If they are in an army, then it's just like any other army.

You have to fight or you get left behind. However, if they are on a job, then it's every man for himself. The rest of the team can't be expected to do everything while Caleb stays behind on the job.
