O serpent heart hid with a flowering face! Did ever a dragon keep so fair a cave? Beautiful tyrant, feind angelical, dove feather raven, wolvish-ravening lamb! Despised substance of devinest show, just opposite to what thou justly seemest - A dammed saint, an honourable villain!

About This Quote

Shakespeare’s O serpent heart hid with a flowering face!Did ever a dragon keep so fair a cave?Beautiful tyrant, feind angelical, dove feather raven, wolvish-ravening lamb! Despised substance of devinest show, just opposite to what thou justly seemest - A dammed saint, an honourable villain! was written in Act IV Scene II of Macbeth , Macbeth is talking to his wife Lady Macbeth. It begins with the line "O serpent heart hid with a flowering face." This line encourages Macbeth to not let his doubts about his actions stop him from doing anything. The next line is "Did ever a dragon keep so fair a cave?" which means that Macbeth can be as bold as he wants because of the fact that he is surrounded by beauties. This encourages him to do whatever he wants.

The next line is "Beautiful tyrant, feind angelical, dove feather raven, wolvish-ravening lamb!" which means that Macbeth will conquer everything. The last two lines are "Despised substance of devinest show" which means that Macbeth will always be praised for his actions and even though he doesn't deserve it at the time he will still be praised for it in death. And lastly "just opposite to what thou justly seemest" which means that even though Macbeth is brutal, ruthless and evil at this point in time, when he's dead so many people will think highly of him even though he was wrong all the time.
