The term came from a Greek word that means “sharp-toothed” in reference to a saw that had a double edge. In 1833, the Oxford English Dictionary described the word as “an expression having two contradictory meanings.” It is also used to describe a situation where there is something wrong with a literal meaning of words but the phrase sounds right. For example, if someone says they are going to be honest when they really aren’t, that person may use an oxymoron such as “being honest when being dishonest.”
