In the play Jason and the Argonauts, Odysseus tells his men to look for a man with a great ship, one that is well built. Then, he orders them to go on to fight the giant Polyphemus because he has been told that this great ship-builder lives on an island where he will be easily found. When Jason and his crew arrive at Polyphemus' island, they see a very curious sight. They see a large, primitive man working on a boat that is only half completed.

He has built it out of wood and covered it with hides to protect it from the elements as he works. They also see that he is surrounded by women who are not only naked but who are also very beautiful and very happy. The man clearly enjoys his work because he is so happy here surrounded by women and would not leave if they asked him to leave home.

One of the sailors asks how such a man can live and Odysseus answers: Odysseus: His name is Polyphemus. He's a huge cannibalistic caveman who lives on an island off the coast of Ithaca where we're going right now because we need his help if we're going to win our final battle with the satyrs. Sailor: The guy's got women everywhere! What's up with that? Odysseus: Well, they're not really women at all.
