This rather awkward looking quote is actually one of my favorites. The interesting thing about it is that it is not directed at the person who is holding the chainsaw, but at the person cutting down the tree. The original proverb stated “The sawyer needs a long saw,” which is to say that the person who has to cut down the tree needs an extremely long saw. But, this version adds an adverb, “please.” This adverb can either be used as a request or as a command.
The word “please” is used in this case to show that this person has some authority over the one holding the chainsaw. While this might seem like an insignificant difference, it actually changes the entire meaning of this saying. Remember what we learned earlier – people take pride in actions which they feel give them authority over others.
And we all take pride in authority – making requests and commands is how we show that we have authority and that others will listen to us and do what we ask them to do.
