About This Quote

This quote is one of many to grace the walls of the famed Parthenon in Greece. It is a powerful and well-known aphorism in contrast to the Greek and Roman gods and their worshipful, related activities. The gods in the Greek and Roman pantheon were not necessarily evil. Rather, they were merely powerful and could be either helpful or destructive, depending on the circumstance.

But the deities in the Parthenon were all bad—they wanted to devour everything that was alive, including people. In this quote, Dante Alighieri explains that these gods represent an array of forces within us that are equally destructive if left unchecked. They include anger, greed, lust, pride, envy, greed and hate.

These are all negative forces that would only make our world a far less comfortable place.
