The more you read, the more you write, and the more you free yourself to do so, the better writer you will become.

About This Quote

The more you read, the more you write, and the more you free yourself to do so, the better writer you will become. This is one of those quotes I’ve heard my whole life. When I was in high school I read a lot. I read multiple books every week, which meant that I was reading a lot.

That’s just how it is when you’re in high school. At the time I thought that the more I read, the better writer I would become. It just seemed like common sense to me. However, writing is an entirely different beast than reading is.

You can read anything and every book will only make you a better writer after you’ve finished reading it. It makes sense to me now that it doesn’t make sense to me then. Reading is something completely different than writing.

One requires concentration and focus; one requires patience and perseverance; one requires patience, perseverance, and drive; whereas the other requires none of those things.
