Writers: read books. Read good books. Read bad books. Learn what does and does not work.

About This Quote

If you want to become a professional writer, you need to read a lot. You need to read a lot of books by your favorite writers and you need to read a lot of books that are not quite so popular. You also need to read books that are widely criticized and even hated. The idea is that when you read all of these things, you will learn what does and does not work in the writing world. After all, if everyone agreed that certain books were always great and others were always terrible, then we would all write the same way and we would be no better than the computer programs we call authors today.
