Ziggy began playing guitar at the age of ten. He joined his first band at the age of sixteen and formed Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers in 1990. The band won Best Reggae Album at both the 1995 Grammy Awards and the 1995 World Music Awards.

He also won two Grammy nominations for his work with his band including Best Reggae Album for "Long Shot" in 1997. Following the split of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, he launched his solo career in 1997 to critical acclaim. His debut album, "Revelation", released in 2000 to great success, featured collaborations with Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, Trina Broussard and Pharrell Williams who produced three singles from the album.

The album reached number one on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart and went double platinum in 2001.
