Yuri Kochiyama was born in Tokyo, Japan. In 1944, at the age of 14, she was sent to a labor camp, Tule Lake War Relocation Center, where she worked as a mess attendant and a vegetable picker. She was later transferred to a camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. After two years of imprisonment and torture, Yuri survived the war by escaping from the camp – for which she received a Bronze Star – but her life was changed forever
In 1959 Yuri came to the United States and settled in San Francisco. She worked in San Francisco Chinatown for ten years, doing research in biochemistry at SF State University and working for artist Jacob Lawrence. Yuri currently lives in Oakland with her husband and two children.
