The book was very popular and sold out rapidly. In 1887 he went to Kyoto to study Buddhist scriptures under a famous Buddhist monk named Shijō Saigyō. In 1901, at age 42, he retired from government service and moved to Kamakura, where he died in 1916.

His most famous work is "Chushingura" (The 47 Ronin), based on a Japanese legend about the samurai who avenged their lord's death. His most lasting impact on Japanese literature was his development of an entirely new poetic form called tanka, which is used to this day.
