Yitzhak Navon was born in the town of Ostrovo, Ukraine. He was a highly decorated military leader during Israel's War of Independence. In 1953, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army and served in that capacity until 1957. In 1959, he resigned from the army and became a public servant
He served as Chairman of the Finance Committee in the Knesset and was also a member of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. In 1964, Navon became Minister of Finance and held that position until 1976 when he became Minister without Portfolio. He was elected to the Knesset in 1988 and served as Minister of Finance until 1992.
Navon died on January 5, 2006 at age 79.
