Yeo-tze was born in Shanghai in 1942, and he graduated from the Shanghai Art School. In 1963, when he was twenty-one, he went to Taipei, Taiwan, where he studied Chinese painting with So Chi-yun and calligraphy with Chiu Chih-yung. He then went to the United States and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1976.
