Yeo-tze was born in Shanghai in 1942, and he graduated from the Shanghai Art School. In 1963, when he was twenty-one, he went to Taipei, Taiwan, where he studied Chinese painting with So Chi-yun and calligraphy with Chiu Chih-yung. He then went to the United States and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1976. From 1980 to 1990, Yeo-tze taught Chinese art at the University of Hawaii
In 1986 he published a book on a famous 14th century Chinese painter named Wang Yuanqi. The following year he met Charles Helm who asked him to write a biography of Wang Yuanqi. In 1988 Yeo-tze moved from Hawaii to the San Francisco Bay Area and became a full-time author.
He lives in Mill Valley, California with his wife Elizabeth.
